Apply cosmetic CSS to various UI objects

As a final ticket for this release, some cosmetic changes to text and possibly form elements should be done so that the interface looks less like it is from the 1990s. Unless some artistic css expert presents themselves, the changes will likely be somewhat non-artistic.

Be sure and stylize the error message block in some way so that it is more obvious that there is a new message that appeared (<p> with red background and white bold text perhaps?)
