performance drop for mysql backend

Between releases of 1.7.6 and 1.7.7 we observed 30% performance drop from v4 and v6 mysql backend. (and roughly 5% for all others)

I didn't have a time to fully investigate entire 1.7.7 release to catch responsible commits.
