Move the out of tree directory into the project directory

The out of tree directory residing as subdirectory in /tmp required juggling back and forth with the generated artifacts into and from the project directory. Instead of having the having out_of_tree_workspace directory in /tmp move it to the project directory. There's no difference for the autotools build - any directory that's not source directory is out of tree directory.
