While both are accepted by Kea, the double slash comments are better for handling the JSON files. Yes, the JSON standard doesn't allow comments, but the files could be interpreted as javascript files and then many editors will understand the syntax. This is convenient for example when importing the snippets into Sphinx or viewing the files with VSCode.
